rabies

There is a raccoon that lives in a tree at work. My coworkers have all decided that since it is up and around sometimes during the day it must be sick and therefore it must have rabies and we need to warn everyone to stay away. I did a little research and found that in 2004, 2 cases were reported in Washtenaw County. Both involved bats. No cases in the state of Michigan were reported on raccoon's. Because of the way this agency does things, I'm a little concerned that the maintenance guy will be sitting out there with a shotgun trying to kill the stupid thing. If the raccoon was trying to get into the buildings or chasing kids or smoking crack I would definitely say kill it. But it's just living in the tree. Sometimes it takes a walk and leaves the tree. That's all. And telling people it has rabies is just silly.

Speaking of smoking crack, when I stopped at the Jehovah's Witness gas station this morning to fill up my tank, I noticed a little plastic bag that is normally crack rock packaging on the ground. Maybe the JW's need to stop bugging me and start talking to the people who leave their crack packages on the ground.

I think that most people are just uncomfortable around wildlife. Perhaps you should become Ranger Jen and set them all straight.
